First registered 6/11/1959 by Beaumont Stores, Lower Hutt. First purchased by Brian 15/05/1962 and is still road registered (on hold). First raced at Levin Motor Racing Circuit in 1962. The engine was a bored out +60 to 998cc BMC 648 camshaft, close ratio gearbox and limited slip differential. A very competitive car under 1000cc running second to the grey and black A40 Farina of Kerry Grant with a FJ motor from the ex Denny Hulme Former Junior Cooper.
The next year I purchased the original motor from Denny Hulme’s Former Junior Cooper which I modified to 90hp. This motor that I raced is now back in its original Cooper chassis in Christchurch. With the advice from BMC’s competitions department, I bored it out to 1100cc specs. I manufactured my own dry sump pump using the body of an Austin A55 oil pump driven off the 648 camshaft. The car was the fastest under 1100cc. I retired from motor racing and sold the car with a standard A40 motor to Terrance Holland 30/07/1965.
In 1990 I got a call from Ivan Griffiths to say he had my A40 Farina and would I like any parts from it. A trip to Taupo with a Ute and trailer, the body had been in a crash and was badly rusted – tip material. I brought everything except the shell back to Palmerston North including the number plate, ID chassis plate and ownership papers. I then bought an A40 car from Peter Bennett (of A40 Farina fame) who had a runner with multiple spares.
The second racing history begins, I transplanted a 1275 MG motor bored out to 74mm with a re stroked crankshaft to 1440cc and a close ratio gearbox in complete with 1-45 DCOE carburetor. I then used all the original parts including special high tensile axles – limited slip Salisbury diff, uprated shock absorber valves, larger front stub axles, twin ¾” diameter anti roll bars, punched reinforced steel wheels and alloy headlight covers. I fitted Mazda front discs with Hunter alloy calipers with 2-1/8” pistons, lambada exhaust sensor and rose jointed A frame axle locator and fitted aluminum muffs to front and rear brake drums. With light weight carbon fibre bonnet & boot.
I fitted a 1960 vintage 7 port Dutch AKM cylinder head (a reproduction head specially for Mini’s) this was modified gas flow and surpassed David Vizard’s specifications. This was fitted with 1.5 ratio rockers, hardened valves and with 2-40 DCOE carburetors complete with a 3 branch exhaust. This motor with 12.9 comp ratio produced 150 bhp and 140 ft/lb. of torque on a bench dyno at 6100 rpm. The gearbox was unique in that it was modified to fit a 4 speed Mini A+ straight cut gear set. After David Vizard drove the car, he suggested that I increase the stroke length 40mm to give a better stroke/crankshaft angle. This entailed making a 7 series 40mm thick alloy heat treated spacer block to be lapped in to the original main bearing tunnels. This allowed for the new 40mm longer forged conrods to be fitted to the engine, this only produced another 2hp but gave a lot better reliability to the engine stress. More hp can easily be maintained with this engine with a different camshaft design to suit the longer stroke.
I raced this in club events with the CDCCC for a few years – the desire for more performance begins. Firstly, I made a stroker crankshaft with a 92mm stroke to give 1585cc. The high tensile 4340 crankshaft complete with a large diameter front snout, rear thrust main bearing and neoprene crankshaft oil seal. This was knifed and aerofoiled, stress relieved, shot peened, nitrided and balanced with a high tensile 4340 light weight flywheel complete with an AP pressure plate with a disc clutch plate and modified, lightened and heat treated Cooper S conrods. A 7 series alloy heat treated main bearing girdle complete with 4 bolt mains, an alloy dry sump manufactured using Austin A110 rotor parts, this was bolted to the girdle plate and cog built driven with the oil pump, water pump, camshaft balancer gear and crankshaft with a windage tray and filtered sump pan. 10” alloy finned drums fitted with ducted air cooled. Fitted with alloy racing fuel tank and fitted with a Triumph 2.5 fuel injection pump to pump water/methanol mist to the carburetors. This is electronically monitored to come in at 3500rpm.
